Rubens : Princely portraits

In the 17th century, the portrait of a monarch was the most prestigious order a painter could receive. Nevertheless, Rubens preferred to them great historical subjects. It was a little in spite of himself that he became an immense portraitist of the most brilliant European courts.

For the first time, 65 princely portraits by Rubens (Louis XIII, Charles Quint, Marie de Medici ...) are displayed at the Luxembourg Museum to immerse visitors in the heart of diplomatic intrigues of the 17th century.
